In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. – Such a profound statement. In the beginning means Time just started. Outside of the time domain was the Word, ie Jesus. Jesus was with with God and He was God.
The same was in the beginning with God. – Jesus with God the Father at the time of creation.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. – Jesus created everything knowing how things would turn out. It didn’t deter Him from creating us. The rebellious mankind! I often think how parents would think about their child, will the child grow up to be obedient and loving and caring child ? or would the child be a grief to the parents. Knowingly would I choose to have a disobedient child? But Jesus and God the Father knew from the beginning how the human race would be. Still He chose to create us.Just because weeds would grow in my garden wouldn’t I plant my favourite plants in my garden. Is the pleasure seeing my favourite plants growing not worth the effort? Is not my choice right in still deciding to plant my seedlings? The beautiful flowers is a joy to the heart and acknowledging my decision was right. The weeds yes its doomed to be plucked up, but without any harm to my plants.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. – In Jesus was life. Not doctrine, not ideas, not mere words, but LIFE. Its His life that is in a child of God which makes us alive to God. Christ, the Son of God, His life in us , He living in us – its a fact. Do we feel it? Should we feel it? We breathe all the time and that’s why we are alive. But do we feel it? Similarly the life of Christ is in us and that’s why we are born again and alive spiritually.
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. – In this dark world, He willingly came and His light did prove that the darkness and light are completely opposite and doesn’t have anything in common.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. – John The Baptist, the man who was born after a long waiting by His parents. Isn’t it worth the wait to have a godly child? A child born with a purpose ordained by God. The forerunner to prepare the way for Jesus – The Son of God. God’s timings are perfect. Human logic demands – Why not now? Why wait? A raw mango or a sweet mango? It takes time for the perfect result. Not too early and not too late. The perfect time and the results are perfect. God never makes mistakes and lets not run ahead of God. Wait my soul, your God knows whats best for you and He will never withhold any Good thing from you.He knows what’s best for you.
The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. – John the Baptist came for a witness – to point to Jesus. If no one tells, how will others know about Jesus – The Son of God who died to free us from our sins.Believing in Him is the only way to get right with God. How will I know that unless one tells me about this? A John the Baptist was needed to witness about Jesus when He was alive, is there not the need of more witness like John the Baptist now as well? Any witness who is led by the Spirit of God can point a person to Jesus. The Holy Spirit will give the right words. We are co-workers with God. Not the Boss. God leads and we work accordingly. We are not to command God what He has to do. Trust this – God knows better than us and He knows what He is doing. He don’t want counsellors , He just want obedient people willing to obey His leading and work as per His timings. Not to run ahead and not to lag behind.
He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. – John the Baptist was only to point to Jesus and not to take the place of Jesus. Give glory to God when God uses you, don’t think of yourself as superior to others. Remember your position as a witness. If not you, God can use anyone else. All glory be to God alone!
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. – Jesus was the true Light. It means there are also false lights. Imitating and deceiving others by giving a feel that they are the true light. Even satan appears as an angel of light. Discern, don’t be mislead. In the true light you will be able to see things clearly. The sins in us will be clearly be revealed to us.
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. – Jesus was in the world. Jesus made the world and He came into the world and the world knew Him not. Why? Did He come as a king? Did He display His power when He came? Did He terrify others by His presence? Wan’t He gentle in His dealings? Wouldn’t we have been comfortable in His presence? Wouldn’t the atmosphere have been informal? Would you dare to be so relaxed in the presence of the head of a country? But still when Jesus, the creator of the whole world came – He came so gently and without any pomp, and He was as one among us and the world knew Him not.
He came unto his own, and his own received him not. – Jesus came to His own and His own received Him not. The ones who waited for the Messiah received Him not. But who missed out? Was it Jesus or the ones who received Him not?
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: – Some received Him, ie, the ones who believe on His name – these ones became the children of God. So you believe in Jesus and you be a child of God. But does everyone believe? Someone says there is a cure for cancer. Some are willing to try it and they are saved. Some perish. Believing on Jesus’ name is the way to be a child of God. Believe. Why would anyone believe in a saviour if they don’t know that they are a sinner? Only a sinner aware of their pathetic condition would look for a Saviour. If you know you have cancer you will look for a treatment.
Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. – The Spirit of God shows the sin in us and makes us aware that we cannot save ourselves. Knowing that I am a sinner makes me realise the need of a Saviour – Jesus – The one who saves His people from their sins. Repent of your sins and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all our sins. Receive Him as your Saviour and you are a child of God – You are born again.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. – Jesus became a man. Remember God took the form of a man and came to dwell among us. Would we be willing to forego the comfort and go to a lowly position? Will we? Jesus did.
John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. – John the Baptist cried. he made it known about Jesus in the place where God appointed for Him. Be a witness to Jesus where God wants you to be. God doesn’t need volunteers. He will keep you in a place specifically appointed for you, small or great doesn’t matter. be a faithful witness there. Its not the numbers that matter. Being faithful to God where He has kept you and just doing what God wants you to do is what matters.
And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. – We received grace. We only received we didnt give Him. By grace are we saved. Nothing else could save us, But His grace.
For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. – Law couldn’t save us. just made us aware of our short comings. Just pointing that is not right for you to do, this is not right for you to do. By law I was made aware of many things that I was not doing right. But will the law help me not to do wrong? Can the law save me from my sins? No. the law just shows your miserable state and just reaffirming the fact that you are a sinner who keeps sinning. But the Holy Spirit shows the sin in me and points me to the one who can help me out of it – Jesus.
No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. – Jesus saw God and declared the Father to us.Who else can better describe God the Father to us, other than the Son? He who has seen Jesus has seen the Father. The characteristics of God was declared to us through the life of Jesus. And we know how God is by seeing Jesus’ life and His attitude and response to different circumstances.
And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? – Who am I?
And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.
And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. – I am a witness to Jesus. My life should be a witness. Others get a glimpse of Jesus by seeing a Christian’s life. Are we really being a witness to who Christ is? God is working in us making us more and more to His image.
And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. – Curious to know who is this new prophet? Learning always, but do we know God?
And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? – Being correct as per the law, checking if the doctrine is right, if the prophet is false or not? Its all good. Discernment is needed. Test all spirits whether they be of God. If of God, draw near to God.
John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; – Jesus, just a man like us. No one knew God was in midst of them.
He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. – Jesus is God, we sinners are unworthy to come before a Holy God. But He came to us and saved us from our sins. Now we can come before God having our sins cleansed by God.
These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. – Jesus the Lamb of God who knew will be sacrificed. He takes away the sin of the world.Without shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. Jesus had to die to save us from our sins. Jesus died and by His blood my sins were cleansed. He died for me. If He didn’t die, I would have perished. The wrath of God would have come upon me and I would have perished like any other sinner. My sins costed Jesus His life. No money, no power can save us from teh wrath of God on sinners. Only the blood of Jesus!
This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. – The life of John the Baptist bore witness to Jesus. That was His life purpose and He accoomplished it. Finally that’s what matters.
And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. – Jesus is the Son of God. To know it is a blessed thing. To bare witness as led by the Spirit is a blessed thing.
Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;
And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! – John the Baptist again proclaimed what he knew was true.
And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. – His disciples left Him to follow Jesus. We will face loss, our ego will be hurt, my prominence will decrease, people will not value me as before. Its all ok. You have to do just what you are led by the Spirit of God. Not seeking to please men, but to please God.
Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? – What seek ye? What are we seeking for? Are those things able to satisfy?
He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. – Come and see Jesus. Know Him. Its not a bed of roses, but He is the one who can satisfy. He will lead you in your life, through good and bad times. He will be with you.
One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. – Jesus, the Messiah , the Anointed one, The one who will save you from your sins.
And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone. – we all are building stones in the church of God. Group of people redeemed by the blood of Christ constitutes the Church – The Church of the Living God.
The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. – Jesus went and looked for Philip and called Philip to follow Him. Jesus calls and then we follow Him.
Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. – Nathanael was doubtful. Good to be truthful about our feelings. But Come and See
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. – Jesus knew what would convince Nathanael. Jesus knows what our individual states are. He knows us personally. He meets the needs of our heart. Not by theological debate and doctrinal arguments. Jesus knows us personally and reveals Him to us as He sees is right for us.
Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. – Nathanael came and saw and knew by personal experience that Jesus is the Son of God.
Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. – Nathanael would know Jesus more. Whats more greater than know God Himself?
And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
