Being a Christian , I was exploring on the role of a wife – mostly on the aspect of wife’s submission to her husband.
Personally I believe wife is a helper to her husband. She should help her husband by giving advice and godly counsel wherever required, but she should not insist her opinion has to be implemented. The wife should pray for the husband to make the right decisions. And the wife should also take the effort to pray and give godly counsel for the well being of the family as a whole.
Also the Husband submits and listens to the wife’s opinion and He is responsible for making the Final decision
Ephesians 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
God will honour the submission of the wife and the family will be blessed.
Woman is not silent in her faith. She is the one who builds up the family.
Proverbs 14:4 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
In Church, positions of authority are given to men.
Jesus and God the Father are one, but the roles are different. Jesus submitted to His Father, it doesn’t nullify His equality to God. Similarly Men and Women are one in Christ Jesus, but roles are different.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. – Galatians 3:28
In Church, women are allowed to prophecy and pray
Prophecy means – that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. – 1 Corinthians 14:3
1 Corinthians 11:5
But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
As mentioned in 1 Timothy 2
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
Men are given the roles of authority in Church as in the below verses.
1 Timothy 3
2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
Unbelieving Husband – what should a Christian wife do?
It can be difficult when the husband is not a believer in Christ. In such cases, the Bible mentions as below. –> It does not imply to be subject to a violent or an abusive husband which endangers the wive’s or children’s lives. Also if the husband insists on something which is contradictory to the Lord’s clear teaching, there is no need to obey that particular thing, because a woman has to give more importance to the headship of Christ and then to the headship of her husband. But otherwise let the wife live with her husband and win him to Christ through her behaviour. The Lord will give the grace to the wife who tries to honour the Lord through her behaviour.
3 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.
3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves,being in subjection unto their own husbands:
6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
1 Corinthians 7
10 And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:
11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.
12 But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
13 And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.
15 But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.
16 For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?
17 But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches.
